The BFA in Musical Theatre at SHSU is a nationally recognized program offering intensive, conservatory-style training in acting, voice, and dance. Students choose either a Theatre or Dance Emphasis, allowing them to focus their training while gaining versatile performance skills. With expert faculty and frequent production opportunities, the program prepares students for professional careers on stage and screen through discipline, creativity, and hands-on experience.

How Do I Get Into the Musical Theatre Program?

Admission to the BFA in Musical Theatre requires an audition. Students may audition before being admitted to SHSU, but acceptance into the program is contingent on admission to the university. Auditions include singing, acting, and dance components. Full audition details and upcoming dates are available on the department website.

What’s the Difference Between the Theatre and Dance Emphases?

Students in the BFA in Musical Theatre select either a Theatre Emphasis or a Dance Emphasis. Both tracks include acting, voice, and dance training, but the emphasis allows students to deepen their focus in the area that best fits their talent and career goals. The Theatre Emphasis includes more coursework in acting and vocal performance, while the Dance Emphasis offers expanded training in ballet, modern, and jazz.
