Design with Purpose. Inspire Lives.
Interior design is about more than aesthetics. It is about improving lives through purposeful spaces. At SHSU, the Interior Design program prepares students to design environments that are functional, safe, and responsive to human needs.
With degree options leading to a B.S. or B.A., our CIDA-accredited program combines creative vision with technical skills in space planning, materials, lighting, codes, and construction documents. Students gain hands-on experience with industry tools like CAD and Revit while learning to collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams.
Difference between the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design
Clarify anything that a student would need to make a decision. What's the difference between the BA and the BS? Are there multiple tracks? Are there similar programs that might suit the student better? Will they earn a certification in the process? Is it offered online and in-person? What's the difference? Each column should focus on a single point.
Where and How Is This Program Available?
Both the bachelor of arts and the bachelor of science in interior design are offered on our Huntsville campus.

Design for Living
When you major in interior design at Sam Houston State University, you’ll study ergonomics, critical thinking, drawing, and interior codes and standards. The result is that you’ll be a designer who understands both the form and function of design, and how to articulate your own creative vision. A unique focus on healthcare design allows students to explore how design supports well-being in hospitals, clinics, and other healing environments.

Accredited
Sam Houston State University’s interior design program is fully accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). This means students may sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (https://www.cidq.org/paths), and also prepares them for entry-level interior design practice, advanced study, and to apply for membership in professional interior design organizations.

Real-World Experience
Interior Design majors are required to complete a supervised internship of at least 200 hours. Students are provided leads for securing internship opportunities; however, part of the internship experience is securing a suitable position.
