Explore. Analyze. Protect the Planet.

The B.S. in Environmental Science at Sam Houston State University equips students to understand and address complex environmental challenges through field, lab, and data-based study. Students gain hands-on experience collecting and analyzing soil, water, and air samples, conducting GIS mapping, and modeling environmental systems, all while learning how science informs policy, sustainability, and community health.

With a curriculum that combines biology, chemistry, geology, and geography, graduates leave prepared to work in environmental consulting, engineering, conservation, or regulatory agencies, or to pursue graduate study in environmental science or policy.

At SHSU, Environmental Science isn’t confined to the classroom; students explore Texas rivers, coasts, and field stations, gaining firsthand experience in environmental systems and solutions that shape a sustainable future.

Choose Your Track

Students tailor their Environmental Science degree through one of three concentrations:

  • Sustainability – Broad interdisciplinary focus blending natural and social sciences for careers in policy, advocacy, or resource management.

  • Pollution Abatement – Emphasizes biology and chemistry for students interested in pollution prevention, remediation, or lab analysis.

  • Water Resources – Centers on hydrology and aquatic systems, preparing students for water management, quality, and conservation careers.

Each track combines core lab sciences with fieldwork and GIS applications, ensuring graduates develop both scientific depth and practical expertise.

Field and Research Opportunities

Environmental Science majors gain hands-on experience through frequent field trips, research projects, and internships. Students also travel for applied study in natural resource management, sustainability, and geoscience. Advanced learners may participate in faculty-led research or international field experiences
