The Masters of English prepares graduates as scholars, teachers, writers, and advocates for the Humanities. The program emphasizes a dynamic approach to studying language and literature, offering courses that incorporate various perspectives and methodologies. Graduates will learn to think critically and theoretically about literature in English, write clearly, and learn effective research and communication practices.

Students can work as tutors or gain experience in several areas of campus work during the first year. They can teach freshman composition in the next year after acquiring 18 hours of graduate credit. A robust system of support for teaching composition is provided.

The Master of English program sponsors a “Let’s Talk Texts” series where a faculty member discusses a text they love and think all literature lovers should know about. National Book Award-winning authors visit campus, and scholars of literature, linguistics, and writing studies share their research.

Students are required to submit a presentation for a scholarly conference, and financial support for attendance is provided. Faculty invite students to present and publish with them, as well as mentor students to find appropriate places to share their research.
