Level up your career! A graduate certificate with 18 hours of English allows you to teach college-level dual credit courses in Texas high schools if you have a separate graduate degree. The certificate also qualifies you to teach freshman- and sophomore-level English courses at colleges if you hold a separate graduate degree.
How long does it take to finish this program?
We recommend that students take no more than two classes per semester. At this pace, a student could finish in three consecutive semesters.
*Summer courses are available but are not required.

Flexible curriculum
Students have the opportunity to chart their own path with three courses in writing and pedagogy and three literature electives chosen from a variety of courses offered.

Ability to Transfer to MA
Courses transfer to an MA in English at SHSU. Once the certificate is complete, students only need an additional 18 hours for the MA in English. Students need to complete the MA in English application.

Short completion time
If students complete two courses per semester, they can finish within a year. We offer two semesters in the summer. Online courses provide flexibility and convenience.
Scholarships
The Scholarship Team in the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office coordinates and administers SHSU scholarship programs for all student classification levels. SHSU utilizes a streamlined application, Scholarships4Kats, which simplifies the process by importing key information from student records and automatically considering students for all relevant scholarships. A student must be accepted to SHSU to apply.
