Protect Natural Systems and Prepare for Conservation Careers

The Conservation Biology Minor at Sam Houston State University prepares students to understand and protect the natural world through the study of ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental sustainability. This minor combines foundational biology courses with specialized training in ecology, plant taxonomy, and wildlife biology to give students a well-rounded understanding of biodiversity and conservation.

Students gain hands-on experience through lab and field-based coursework while developing skills in observation, data analysis, and scientific reasoning. With additional coursework in chemistry, students are equipped to approach environmental challenges with a strong scientific foundation.

What Will I Study? 

Students complete core courses in general biology, ecology, plant taxonomy, and wildlife biology, along with chemistry coursework to strengthen their scientific foundation. The program also includes an elective option such as aquatic biology, vertebrate natural history, or animal behavior, allowing students to explore specific interests within conservation.
