Sam Houston State University’s B.A. in Biology provides a broad education in biological sciences with an emphasis on liberal arts. Students complete a foreign language and a minor to enhance communication and critical thinking skills. The program prepares graduates for diverse careers in research, healthcare, education, and environmental fields or for advanced study. It combines scientific knowledge with a well-rounded academic foundation, equipping students with the skills needed to succeed in professional and academic settings.

Sam Houston State University’s B.S. in Biology provides a solid foundation in core biological sciences including genetics, microbiology, ecology, and physiology. The program emphasizes hands-on laboratory and field experience to prepare students for diverse careers in research, healthcare, environmental science, and education. With opportunities for undergraduate research and internships, students develop critical thinking and technical skills. Graduates are well-prepared for advanced studies or professional roles in biology-related fields, supported by experienced faculty and modern facilities.

What’s the Difference Between the Two Degrees?

The Bachelor of Science (BS) requires additional hours of a social science (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, communication studies, etc.), whereas the Bachelor of Arts (BA) requires additional hours of a foreign language (e.g., Spanish, French, American Sign, etc.).

Hands-On Learning with Faculty Mentors and Modern Facilities

Biology students gain real-world experience through research, fieldwork, and lab-based learning guided by dedicated faculty mentors. The department’s facilities include greenhouses, an animal facility, molecular biology labs, and the Natural History Collection. Students can also explore applied research at the Pineywoods Environmental and Research Laboratory, a 250-acre field station. These opportunities prepare graduates for careers in research, healthcare, environmental management, biotechnology, education, and beyond.
