Empowering Socially Engaged Artists

The MFA in Art and Social Practice is a three-year program that supports artists and cultural producers working at the intersection of art, community, and social impact. Students engage in collaborative, research-based projects that address real-world issues while developing leadership and teaching skills. With support from SHSU’s Center for Community Engagement, students build meaningful partnerships and gain hands-on experience. Located just north of Houston, the program offers access to a wide network of arts professionals, visiting artists, and cultural resources that enrich the graduate experience.

Who is this MFA program for?

This program is designed for artists, cultural producers, educators, and community organizers who want to explore the social role of art through collaborative, research-based practice. Applicants may come from traditional art backgrounds or other disciplines and should demonstrate a commitment to community engagement and creative inquiry.

What makes this MFA different?

Unlike traditional studio-based MFA programs, this degree focuses on socially engaged art, collaboration, and public impact. Coursework and community partnerships emphasize dialogue, activism, and interdisciplinary research to help students grow as artists, educators, and leaders.
