CONNECTING ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY
The MFA in Art and Social Practice is a three-year program that supports interdisciplinary artists working in traditional or experimental mediums who want to create collaborative, research-based projects. Students will create works that address real-world issues while developing leadership and teaching skills. With support from SHSU’s Center for Community Engagement, students build meaningful partnerships and gain hands-on experience. Located just north of Houston, the program offers access to a wide network of arts professionals, visiting artists, and cultural resources that enrich the graduate experience.
Who is this MFA program for?
This program is designed for artists who want to explore the way their work interacts with aspects of local, regional, and global communities. Students will explore the social role of art through collaborative, research-based projects. The program provides opportunities for students to exhibit work in gallery and community settings.
What makes this MFA different?
The MFA in Art and Social Practice program combines aspects of traditional studio-based MFA programs with opportunities for participation, collaboration, and community dialogue. The curriculum includes studio critiques, developing community partnerships, teaching seminars, professional development, and interdisciplinary research to help students grow as artists, educators, and leaders.

Create Change Through Art
