Sam Houston Honors Scholarship

Incoming freshmen will be given the opportunity to receive the Sam Houston Honors Scholarship. For those who qualify, this competitive Sam Houston Honors Scholarship (distributed over an SHSU undergraduate college career no longer than four years, at a maximum of $40,000) will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Incoming freshmen who meet the requirements are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • have demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership
  • have achieved scores of 1350 (SAT) or 30 (ACT)
  • have been accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College
  • be incoming first-time freshmen (high school graduates with dual or AP credit are eligible)
  • Scholarship Renewal Requirements: The Sam Houston Honors  Scholarship will renew each academic year (up to eight undergraduate semesters) provided students meet the following:

  • live in the Honors dorms their first year
  • maintain Status One in the Honors College, meeting all requirements for satisfactory academic progress toward graduation “With Highest Honors”
  • maintain full-time enrollment (12 credit hours) at SHSU each fall and spring semester. NOTE: Scholarship funds will not be awarded if students are enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours. Students who fall below 12 hours during a semester will be put on probation (without scholarship) the following semester
  • maintain a cumulative SHSU GPA of at least 3.25
  • be Honors advised each semester
  • attend 3 qualifying honors events per year
  • enroll in face-to-face courses (cannot be enrolled 100% online)

Scholarship Disbursement Plan Effective Fall 2022 for Incoming Freshman:

The scholarship will be awarded per Academic Year (eight fall and spring semesters only) as follows:

Freshman year: $10,000

Sophomore year: $10,000

Junior year: $10,000

Senior year: $10,000

*If the student graduates in fewer than eight semesters, the student will forfeit any remaining scholarship funds.

Elliott T. Bowers Honors Scholarship

The Elliott T. Bowers Honors College offers two $20,000 academic scholarships each fall semester to academically strong and highly motivated incoming first-time freshmen. The Bowers Scholarship was designed, in part, to bring “exceptionally motivated and capable students” into an academic and social environment consisting of their academic peers, while providing them with a means for close interaction with faculty and for enhanced educational opportunities. To facilitate this unique opportunity for qualifying students, the scholarship is intended to help defray the costs of attending college. The Bowers Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 to honor Dr. Elliott T. Bowers (1919-2003), who served as the ninth president of Sam Houston State University from 1970 to 1989.

  • be incoming first-time freshmen (high school graduates with dual or AP credit are eligible)
  • have been accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College

Richard A. Cording Scholars Endowed Scholarship

Amount varies. Recipient must be an incoming full-time freshman student, majoring in any discipline, and be accepted as a member of the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program.

To apply, fill out the Scholarships4Kats application. You will automatically be considered for the Richard Cording Endowed Scholarship Fund.


Assam Scholarship in Honors Research

$500 per year. The recipient must be on Status One in the Honors College, in good standing and majoring in any discipline; submit a research paper or a poster to the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, and continue at SHSU at least one summer session or one long semester after the scholarship award is announced. If the recipient is graduating at the end of the semester the full $500 may be awarded. A GPA of 3.25 is required.

To apply, fill out the Scholarships4Kats application. Once complete, visit the Assam Scholarship Honors Research and complete the supplemental question(s) to be considered for this scholarship.


Yancey M. Holmes Endowed Scholarship

$1,000 per semester for eight consecutive regular semesters while pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in any discipline and accepted for admission into the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College. The recipient must maintain enrollment in the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College and must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 during both semesters of their freshman year and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.4 thereafter (sophomore, junior, senior years). The application deadline is February 1st.

To apply, fill out the Scholarships4Kats application. You will automatically be considered for the Yancey M. Holmes Endowed Scholarship.


Rosser Family Endowed Scholarship

$3000 per year. The Recipient must be a first-time incoming freshman in good standing; major in any discipline within the College of Business or the College of Education; be accepted to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College; have a minimum high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.40; have an SAT composite score of 1200 or above and/or an ACT composite of at least 27, or must have graduated in the top 10% of their high school class. The recipient must maintain enrollment in the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College and must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 during both semesters of their freshman year and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.4 thereafter (sophomore, junior, senior years).

Important Scholarship Deadlines

December 1

  • Complete the ApplyTexas Application online.
  • Complete the Honors College application.
  • Contact your prospective academic department to learn about its scholarship opportunities and application procedures.

February 1

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to assist in the consideration process. (Most institutional scholarships are merit-based, but some also consider socioeconomic disadvantages or financial need, as assessed by the FAFSA.)
  • Complete the SHSU Scholarships4Kats online.

To be considered for the full range of scholarships offered through the SHSU Office of Student Aid Financial Services, students MUST complete the FAFSA. The FAFSA is available beginning October 1, 2021 and the priority deadline for all students is November 1.
