"The Rate In Which I Am":
Department Of Dance Performs At TDEA Showcase

Dance education is steadily growing, with many programs focusing on the process of creating as well as the analysis of dance to help further the understanding of the art form. The Department of Dance at Sam Houston State University has taken their skills to the Texas Dance Educators Association to share information on the program as well as performing in the Convention Showcase.
TDEA is known for celebrating its dedication and service to advancement towards dance education throughout the state of Texas. During this four-day convention, participants have access to professional workshops, performances and technique classes.
“We have a lot of alumni teaching in high schools throughout the state of Texas,” said assistant professor of dance, David Deveau. “It was one of those alumni that reached out and suggested that we participate this year.”
Dance students performed work by SHSU faculty member, Joshua Manculich, titled “The Rate In Which I am”, while also participating in the College Fair to help inform participants and answer questions about the dance program offered at SHSU.
“The dance was very well received,” said assistant professor of dance, Dionne Noble. “The positive comments from alumni and Texas area dance teachers was overwhelming.”
Manculich’s choreography performed by students at TDEA, holds a meaning that is contrasting to the actual performance in speed.
“My original idea was to investigate how the rate in which we live determines our experiences,” said Manculich. “The work's fast fluid movement, set to Dustin O'Halloran's beautiful score, makes this dance go by in a flash. All in all, it is my hope, the dancers and audience remember to hit pause from time to time.”
The convention participants are used to seeing dance team content in the showcase. Because of this, Manculich’s piece opened their eyes to new ways of moving.
“We definitely stood out with Josh’s work,” said Deveau. “It was very different from what the other schools were offering. Our dancers were also top notch and that got a lot of notice.”
