Travel

Shuttle Service

Lonestar Executive Limousine will provide shuttle service between George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston and Huntsville, Texas. Be aware that Houston has two airports, but the other is on the wrong side of Houston; make sure to fly into George Bush Intercontinental Airport. We will collect your flight information and cell phone number when you make your reservation.

$30 One-Way NASSR Shuttle

$60 Roundtrip NASSR Shuttle Service

Uber & Carpooling

Uber rides run from $60 to $120 one way. Not many Ubers are available at any one time in Huntsville, so reserving a car in advance would be prudent.

If you are planning on renting a car at IAH and would be willing to carry one or more conference attendees with similar arrival times, please let us know at nassr2023@shsu.edu. We will try to help coordinate such efforts. All hotels in Huntsville offer free parking; see the website regarding parking on campus.

Lodging

The conference organizers have arranged for blocks of rooms at the Holiday Inn Express, which has the advantage of being within walking distance of campus ($109 + fees and taxes). Other blocks are reserved at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriot ($119 + fees and taxes), and Hampton Inn & Suites ($139 + fees and taxes). These rates will be reserved until February 28, 2023.

All three of these Huntsville hotels offer free parking, wi-fi, and breakfast. The conference will run shuttle vans to and from these hotels mornings and evenings. Campus parking is available in the lot adjoining the conference center (see Parking). Classes will be in session during the conference so no campus accommodations are possible and the university hotel is booked for SHSU’s annual Jazz Festival.

The Woodlands, a north Houston suburb with high-end hotels, restaurants, and shopping has many lodging and dining options. The Woodlands is approximately 45-minutes south of Huntsville, on Interstate 45. Downtown Houston is approximately 75-minutes south of Huntsville.

Local Dining

While Houston is one of the largest and most cosmopolitan of American cities, Huntsville, just an hour north, has remained stubbornly parochial in its dining options. With this in mind, the conference organizers, working with our sponsors, have integrated dining plans into the conference schedule; lunches and dinners for all three days of the conference will be provided by provisioners who can attend to most dietary restrictions. The suggestions below, all locally owned, are for those who wish to explore alternate, regional options.

Around the corner from the Holiday Inn Express is Huntsville’s premier steakhouse, 1836, home to an upstairs cocktail bar (open until 10 p.m.).

If Texas BBQ is on your bucket list, you have to visit the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church’s The Church of the Holy Smoke. If the current owner, Tameka Edison, is there, ask her for the history of the joint – this place is legendary.

If you want a taste of contemporary Texas craft BBQ, visit Walls BBQ, just off of Huntsville’s downtown square and named after Huntsville oldest prison, a stone’s throw away.

East Texas is home to many Cajuns, and Huntsville is home to the wildly successful Arnaud’s Cajun Kitchen, a food truck that is happy to serve you trays of spicy crawfish, buckets of cold beers, and other Cajun dishes. Expect a long line. There are other food truck options in the park as well.

A local favorite is Carbonero, a family-friendly El Salvadorian restaurant. They are catering the conference dinner on Thursday night, but are open for lunch and dinner every day except Sundays.

Sipsy’s Coffee House is located in the Avenues, the neighborhood to the west of the main campus of SHSU. They have a drive-thru option but are located in a small food truck park with other options available.

Perhaps the best tacos in town are from Taco Mania. The quesabirria tacos are authentic but expect to wait for them and there is only outside seating.

Thursday’s lunch is being catered by Five Loaves Deli, a local sandwich shop, and Saturday’s banquet is being held at Sam’s Table, both of which can accommodate most any dietary restriction.
