What is the Dominey Observatory

The Dominey Observatory is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to exploration, research, and public engagement in astronomy. Located northeast of Huntsville, it serves as both a learning center for students and a community hub for stargazing and outreach events. The observatory features a PlaneWave Instruments CDK700 Telescope System, equipped with a retractable dome and a custom periscope attachment, enabling both research-grade imaging and direct viewing. The fully ADA-accessible design ensures that guests of all abilities can share in the wonder of the universe.

History of the Observatory

Originally located atop the Farrington Building on the SHSU campus, the observatory was later relocated to a rural site off Highway 19 to reduce light pollution and provide a clearer view of the night sky. Over the years, it has evolved from a small teaching space to a cutting-edge astronomical facility. This transformation is attributed to the generosity of Barbara Dominey, who made a gift in memory of her late husband, Sam Dominey. Her support enabled the complete modernization and expansion of the observatory, establishing it as one of the most advanced public observatories in the region.

The Dominey Legacy

Sam Dominey, an SHSU physics graduate, U.S. Army veteran, and lifelong innovator, left an enduring mark on the university’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. As a teaching assistant, he restored an antique telescope found in campus storage, which was later identified as one of only four intact Alvan Clark & Sons models in existence. This historic instrument is proudly displayed in the new facility, linking SHSU’s rich past in astronomy to its bright future among the stars.

Under the leadership of Public Outreach Director Michael Prokosch, the observatory continues to inspire students, faculty, and visitors alike, carrying forward the Dominey family’s legacy of curiosity, discovery, and dedication to education.
