Notable Scholarships

 

Chuck Caughey Geoscience Endowed Scholarship

Established by geologist Chuck Caughey, this scholarship covers the full cost of attending SHSU, including tuition, fees, books, and room and board, for up to four long semesters or until the recipient obtains a bachelor's degree, whichever comes first. It is designed for transfer students majoring in Geology who demonstrate financial need and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. Each year, top applicants are selected, and final decisions are made after virtual interviews with each finalist.

Scholarship for Service (SFS)

Offered by the Department of Computer Science, the SFS provides full scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students interested in cybersecurity. Benefits include full tuition coverage for up to 2-3 years, annual stipends ($27,000 for undergraduates and $37,000 for graduates), and a professional allowance of $6,000 per academic year for expenses such as travel, conferences, research materials, and professional training. Recipients must agree to work after graduation for a federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial government agency or a Federally Funded Research and Development Center in a cybersecurity-related position for a period equal to the length of the scholarship.

The Washington Center (TWC)

To support students pursuing opportunities like the William D. Clarke, Sr. Diplomatic Security Fellowship, which offers funding for a two-year master’s degree and prepares students for careers as Diplomatic Security Service Special Agents. While Texas does not offer a specific state scholarship through TWC, SHSU provides resources, fee waivers, and guidance for applicants. Students can also explore additional funding through the Scholarships4Kats portal and SHSU’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.

The Department of Defense Cyber Scholarship Program (DoD CySP)

Offers a unique opportunity for SHSU Computer Science students to earn a debt-free degree, gain hands-on experience through a summer internship, and secure a guaranteed job upon graduation. As a designated Center of Academic Excellence (CAE), SHSU is eligible to award this prestigious scholarship to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in computer science. The scholarship covers full tuition, required fees (including healthcare), and textbooks and provides a stipend of $27,000 for undergraduates and $32,000 for graduate students. In exchange, recipients commit to a year-for-year service obligation with the federal government after graduation.

Fred Pirkle Endowed Scholarship

Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Mr. Fred Pirkle graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1970 with a degree in Industrial Arts with a minor in Business Administration. He went on to obtain his Master’s degree in 1971 in Arts and Industrial Technology. After teaching at Cy-Fair ISD and Jersey Village Senior High, Fred opened up a part-time BBQ catering business where he would become known as “Shotgun Fred” as he traveled the country competing in cookoffs. He later founded Threm-Omega_tech, Inc. in 1982 in Pennsylvania where his company would design and manufacture the most advanced, reliable, compact self-actuated valve for temperature control available. His love for industrial technology and innovativeness encouraged him to establish this endowment. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.
