National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education

The National Security Agency has designated Sam Houston State University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE) through the academic year 2025.

The Cyber Forensics Intelligence Center (CFIC) brings together leading industry participants, practitioners, and faculty members from a variety of disciplines to research cyber forensic and digital security topics that are of interest to governmental, commercial and legal communities.  More details can be found here.

The CFIC serves as a portal for cyber defense education to craft the next generation of cybersecurity, computer science, and digital forensics professionals. Dr. Bing Zhou is the CAE institution POC and Rob Greenberg leads the CFIC and is the alternate CAE institution POC. The CFIC is supported by faculty members from across the SHSU CS department. An industry advisory board (IAB) meets regularly and provides oversight and guidance.

The National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) Program has validated that the SHSU Bachelor’s of Science, Major in Computing Science (Information Assurance, IA) meets all elements of the required Program of Study (PoS).  Learn more about the CAE Program.

Partnerships

The Cyber Forensics Intelligence Center serves as a collaborative hub where Sam Houston State University students work directly with industry experts on real-world challenges. By bridging academic learning with professional practice, the center enhances student development through hands-on projects, mentorship, and applied research. At the same time, it helps industry partners address pressing cybersecurity and forensic needs, fostering innovation, workforce readiness, and stronger ties between higher education and the professional community.

The Computer Science Alumni Mentoring Program (CS_AMP) connects current SHSU Computer Science students with alumni and industry professionals through structured mentoring relationships. The program provides students with guidance on career development, technical skills, workplace readiness, and networking opportunities, while also allowing alumni to give back by sharing their experiences and expertise. Through one-on-one mentoring, workshops, and professional insights, CS_AMP helps students bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry expectations, preparing them for successful careers in technology and beyond.
