Applied Behavioral Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach to understanding and changing behavior. It focuses on teaching meaningful skills and reducing challenging behaviors by using behavioral principles. ABA is commonly used to support individuals with autism but can help anyone learn new behaviors and improve quality of life.

Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis:

Behavior Principles

The principles of behavior are foundational concepts in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that describe why behaviors occur—how behaviors are learned, maintained, and changed. These principles are based on decades of empirical research and are used to understand and influence behavior effectively.

Evidence-Based Practices

B.F. Skinner believed that we communicate for a variety of reasons, and he focused on understanding the purpose behind each form of communication. His approach to language emphasizes identifying why a student is communicating, rather than just how. By analyzing the function of a student’s communication—such as requesting, labeling, or answering questions—we can better understand their strengths and areas for growth. This allows us to build a more targeted and effective plan to teach new language and communication skills.
