Student Opportunities
Get Involved Beyond Class
As a Theatre and Musical Theatre student at SHSU, you'll take center stage in a dynamic learning environment. From student-directed productions to student organizations, you’ll gain real-world experience, build your creative network, and develop the skills to thrive as a theatre professional.
Additional Opportunities
From straight plays to large-scale musicals, SHSU Theatre and Musical Theatre students perform and work behind the scenes throughout the year. Every production is a chance to grow as a performer, designer, or technician, gaining hands-on experience and sharing your work with the community. Even non-theatre majors are welcome to audition and participate, providing opportunities for anyone with a passion for theatre to get involved.
The Directors’ Debut series gives students the opportunity to helm their own productions, guiding every aspect of a show from concept to performance. Students develop skills in directing, collaboration, and leadership while working closely with actors, designers, and production teams. This hands-on experience allows student directors to bring their creative vision to life and gain professional preparation in a supportive, real-world setting.
Students in design and technology programs have numerous opportunities to contribute to productions both on and off stage. From set and lighting design to costume construction, sound engineering, and stage management, students gain hands-on experience bringing performances to life. Working alongside faculty or student directors, you will develop professional skills, collaborate creatively, and play a vital role in every aspect of the theatrical process.
SHSU Theatre and Musical Theatre has participated in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) since 2001, providing students and faculty with invaluable opportunities for growth and professional development.
KCACTF allows the Department to strengthen its Theatre and Musical Theatre programs while giving students the chance to connect with peers from across the U.S. and learn from renowned theatre professionals.
