Biography

Dr. Joyce McCauley, the Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement, is also a professor in the College of Education where she teaches courses in literacy. Before coming to Sam Houston State University in 1994, she lived on Guam for twenty-six years and taught at the University of Guam. Her graduate and undergraduate students have always been involved in the community through their work in the public schools.

Biography

Lee Miller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology here at Sam Houston State University. She received her B.A. from Smith College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University. Dr. Miller’s research interests include community responses to disasters and risk perception related to natural and technological hazards, particularly in rural contexts. She is also co-Director of the Center for Community Engagement, where she works with faculty and community organizations to design courses and organize projects to meet the needs of community-based organizations and underrepresented communities. From working on international economic development projects, to measuring risk perception in rural Texas, Dr. Miller identifies community needs and seeks ways to help address them through her professional experience, teaching, and research.

Biography

Taylor joined the Center for Community Engagement in October 2016, bringing a passion for community engagement and experience in community-based academic research. A graduate of Huntsville High School (2009), Taylor was active in a wide variety of community activities. She then graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, earning a B.A. with Departmental Honors in Anthropology (2013). She is currently completing her M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Denver where she led a community-based ethnographic project with a women’s emergency homeless shelter in Denver, Colorado. After moving back to Huntsville, Taylor is looking forward to re-investing herself in the community once again.
