Resources & FAQs
Students are encouraged to meet with the Student Money Management Center early in the application process to discuss financial matters. Prepare to have the estimated costs of your program when you meet with the Student Money Management Center to better forecast how your financial aid may apply.
- Financial Aid
- Students who study abroad will be able to access their financial aid to alleviate some of the costs by completing the Consortium Agreement, found within the second stage of your Bearkat Abroad Portal application.
- Scholarships
- Students who study abroad are eligible for scholarships in the following ways based on funds available:
- Faculty-led Programs, Summer, and Winter Study Abroad: Up to $1000
- Semester study abroad: Up to $3000
- Faculty-led Programs, Summer, and Winter Study Abroad: Up to $1000

The GEC is committed to the health, safety, and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff abroad. The GEC monitors information from the U.S. Department of State, and country updates from a variety of sources for all study abroad programs it oversees:
In addition, all travelers going abroad under the GEC’s study abroad programs are required to be under SHSU’s Travel Insurance that provides coverage for unexpected medical issues, including illness and injuries.The GEC is available to answer general questions about studying abroad for families. At the same time, staff are bound by FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act), a federal law under the U.S. Department of Education that protects the privacy of student education records. Hence, the GEC is unable to disclose student records to anyone other than the student without prior written consent. It is encouraged that any specific questions beyond general information to be discussed with the student directly.

Appointments
The GEC accepts appointments through Campus Connect in person or virtually. Our availability falls under the student resources appointment type.
GEC Walk-In Hours:
Mon - Tue: 9am-11am
Wed - Thu: 2pm-4pm
In-person walk-in advising takes place in Farrington Building Room 116.
