New SHSU Local Scholarship to Support Students from Surrounding Communities
Sam Houston State University is strengthening its commitment to the surrounding region with the introduction of the SHSU Local Scholarship guaranteed for students who live in Walker County and the surrounding counties. The program provides $4,000 in scholarship support: $1,000 per year for up to four years for eligible students who choose to attend SHSU.
The SHSU Local Scholarship reflects the university’s long-standing connection to the communities surrounding Huntsville and expands access to a high-quality, affordable college education for students across the region. It represents an investment in the communities that support and strengthen the university.
Students who reside in Walker, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Trinity, Madison, Grimes, Houston or Polk County are automatically eligible for the scholarship once they complete the required admissions and scholarship steps.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must:
- Reside in Walker, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Trinity, Madison, Grimes, Houston or Polk County
- Complete the SHSU admissions application
- Submit the Scholarships4Kats scholarship application
- Maintain a 2.5 GPA while enrolled at SHSU
- Complete 24 credit hours per academic year
The scholarship is renewable for up to three consecutive years for students who maintain eligibility requirements and remain continuously enrolled at SHSU.
By creating a guaranteed scholarship specifically for students in surrounding communities, SHSU continues its mission to make higher education more accessible while strengthening its partnerships with local schools and families.
