SHSU Enrollment Reaches Unofficial Record for Fall 2026
Today, Sam Houston State University reached an unofficial enrollment record on the 10th day of class of 21,956 students for the Fall 2026 semester after reporting a strong first class day enrollment of 21,776 students.
“This milestone reflects the collective commitment of people across Sam Houston State University,” said Heather Thielemann, senior vice president for Strategic Enrollment and Innovation. “Each number represents a student with goals for the future. From a student’s first inquiry through the first day of class, our faculty, staff and student leaders work together to help Bearkats feel welcomed, supported and prepared to succeed.”
The university’s enrollment growth includes the largest first-time freshman class in SHSU history. First-day enrollment included 3,567 first-time freshmen, an 8.7% increase from Fall 2025. The university’s overall first-time freshman cohort, which includes students who began their studies during the summer, reached a record 3,662 students.
The enrollment milestone represents contributions from throughout the university, including recruitment, admissions, financial aid, advising, orientation, housing, academic programs and student support services. Those efforts help prospective students navigate the enrollment process while ensuring new and returning students have the resources and connections they need throughout their time at SHSU.
“Reaching nearly 22,000 students is about far more than institutional growth,” Thielemann said. “It represents thousands of students who have chosen SHSU as the place where they will pursue their educational goals, build relationships and prepare to serve their communities.”
Fall enrollment numbers become final on the 12th class day. Official, certified Fall 2026 enrollment figures will be reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board later this fall.
