2026 Distinguished Alumni, Outstanding Young Alumnus - Joseph Anderson

Former track and field athlete and graduate of Sam Houston State University, Joseph Anderson (’11) has learned over the years that success is a marathon, not a sprint. After years of hard work and dedication, Anderson has become known for his leadership as owner-operator of Chick-fil-A I-45 & Almeda.

The lifelong Houston resident once believed he would become an Olympic runner thanks to his success throughout high school. As he discussed potential career paths, including business and marketing, with a teammate, they told Anderson they believed he would excel in the business world. That conversation inspired him to pursue degrees in both marketing and management while seeking internships that would develop his business acumen.

It was during an internship with Marriott Hotels that Anderson discovered his passion for hospitality. He was drawn to the opportunity to make people's days better by creating exceptional experiences, a philosophy he carried with him as he went on to work at McDonald's. His experience at the Golden Arches piqued his interest in the restaurant industry, ultimately leading to an opportunity with Chick-fil-A in Stafford, Texas.

After learning from Chick-fil-A operator Royce Ballard and helping open a second restaurant, Anderson knew he wanted to become an owner-operator himself. Following completion of a two-year Leadership Development Program that took him across the country opening and operating restaurants, he achieved that goal in 2018, becoming the youngest African American Chick-fil-A owner-operator in Texas.

This achievement represented years of hard work and perseverance, particularly as Anderson continued through Chick-fil-A's Leadership Development Program while navigating the heartbreaking loss of his father. During that difficult season, he leaned on the support of his family, community and Chick-fil-A family, whose encouragement helped him continue pursuing his dream.

Anderson has always been passionate about serving others and creating meaningful impact within his community. As a student, he fostered community through his involvement with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., The Exceptional Men of the Talented Tenth, Inc. and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. He was also crowned SHSU's Homecoming King in 2011.

Since graduating and opening his restaurant, Anderson has remained committed to investing in his community. He mentors young men through his local church and supports student-athletes as they transition to and compete at the collegiate level. He also partners with the Houston Food Bank and Shared Table, helping provide more than six million meals through local Houston food banks alongside Chick-fil-A's Houston market.

For his leadership in business and the community, Anderson has received multiple awards and recognitions, including honors for sales growth, operational excellence and food safety. He has also been recognized on The Imani School Wall of Fame and currently serves as chair of the Partnership Committee for Chick-fil-A's Houston Market Advisory Group. In this role, he is one of ten operators helping guide strategic decisions for a market of more than 100 restaurants that is on track to become a $1 billion market.

Beyond leading his restaurant, Anderson is committed to developing the next generation of leaders. He hosts community events, organizes fundraisers, participates in school initiatives and mentors student-athletes. Through the South Houston High School Leadership Academy, he shares his leadership journey and passion for servant leadership, inspiring students to make a lasting impact in their own communities.
