SHSU Students Gain Career Confidence Through Dress for Success Houston
Thanks to a connection made by Sam Houston State University (SHSU) alumna and KHOU 11 News anchor Mia Gradney, a group of Bearkats gained valuable career preparation and confidence through Dress for Success Houston (DFSH).
The idea began when Gradney learned from fellow alumni that some SHSU students lacked access to interview-appropriate clothing. While the university had a strong resource for men, female students needed more options and additional support. Recognizing the challenge, and knowing a viable solution, she reached out to make a connection.
A longtime volunteer with DFSH, Gradney worked with Kathleen Gilbert and Keila Tyner from SHSU to develop a career development and professional styling experience for students in the College of Health Sciences.
“Every woman deserves to feel empowered and prepared, especially when stepping into her first interview or launching her career as a soon-to-be or recent Sam Houston State graduate,” Gradney said. “This partnership helps make that possible.”

Eight students recently traveled to Houston to take part in the experience. Each received personalized styling and a complete interview outfit — including a suit, blouse, shoes, bag and accessories — along with a one-hour seminar on first impressions and interview success led by DFSH professionals.
“The students were deeply appreciative and inspired by the experience, noting how empowered and confident they felt after participating,” said Tyner. “The event was such a success that we plan to offer it again next semester.”
The initiative reflects the value of SHSU’s alumni network and expands upon existing campus resources like the Reba Bock Career Closet.
