Art and Wellness Unite at SHSU for World Mental Health Day Event
Sam Houston State University celebrated World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10 with “PAWS for Mental Health: Art Edition,” an interactive campus event designed to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health.
Hosted by Student Wellness in collaboration with the Department of Art, the event invited students to explore the connection between creativity and well-being through hands-on activities in the Frank Parker Plaza.
The PAWS for Mental Health initiative is part of SHSU’s JED Campus commitment to promoting emotional health and preventing suicide among college students. This year’s art-themed event encouraged students to express themselves, relax, and connect with campus mental health resources.
As part of the program, the Student Art Association led a community art project, now displayed on the third floor of the Lowman Student Center. In addition, graduate students from the Master of Fine Arts in Social Practice program hosted “The Art of Rest,” a reflective space designed to help participants engage in restful, meditative activities to support mental well-being.
Campus mental health partners, including the SHSU Counseling Center, Jack Staggs Counseling Clinic, and CARE Network, were also present to share information and resources.
Through initiatives like PAWS for Mental Health, SHSU continues to strengthen its culture of care, encouraging students to seek support, foster connection and find balance through creativity and community.
