Grants TO Empower Bearkats
At SHSU, we understand that financial challenges can disrupt a student’s academic journey. That’s why we offer a variety of grants—forms of aid that don’t need to be repaid—to help Bearkats overcome financial barriers and continue pursuing their degrees. These grants are offered based on financial need, academic goals, and specific eligibility criteria.
Pell Grant
Federal Pell Grants usually are only offered to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor's, graduate, or professional degree. A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.
The amount you get, though, will depend on:
- Your Expected Family Contribution
- The cost of attendance (determined by your school for your specific program)
- Your status as a full-time or part-time student
- Your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less.
What should I do to maintain the grant?
In general, you must maintain enrollment in an undergraduate course of study at a non-foreign school to receive a Federal Pell Grant. Additionally, you will have to fill out the FAFSA form every year you’re in school in order to stay eligible for federal student aid.

| 3 | Honorable Military Discharge: Enrollment in an eligible institution of higher education no later than 12 months after being released from active-duty military service under Honorable conditions. |
| 4 | TEOG Transfer: Completion of at least 24 credit hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA after receiving an IY Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG) in fall 2014 or later and transferring to an eligible institution with a minimum 2.5 GPA. |

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is a grant with limited funding for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. This grant is offered to students who have the most financial need. A Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.
Once the full amount of the school’s SEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more SEOG awards can be made for that year.
Texas Public Educational Grant (TPEG)
The Texas Public Educational Grant (TPEG) is a grant that was established by the Texas Legislature to help students with financial need attend public community colleges, public technical colleges, or public state colleges in Texas. The TPEG does not have to be repaid like student loans.

TEACH Grant
The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching.
Students who are receiving a TEACH Grant. Initial counseling is completed the first time the TEACH grant is offered. Subsequent counseling is completed for each additional year the grant is offered.
How long will it take?
TEACH Grant Initial and Subsequent Counseling must be completed in a single session. Most people complete counseling in 20-30 minutes.

Who should complete this?
Students who are receiving a TEACH Grant and have completed TEACH Initial or Subsequent Counseling for the awarded academic year.

The ATS Process must be completed in a single session. Most people complete the ATS in 20-30 minutes.

What is Exit Counseling?
TEACH Grant Exit Counseling explains how to fulfill your TEACH Grant service obligation and the terms and conditions that apply if your TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.
You must complete exit counseling when you:
- Graduate
- Withdraw from the school where you received your TEACH Grant.
Who should complete this?
Students who received a TEACH Grant and are graduating or withdrawing from their program of study.
How long will it take?
Most people complete counseling in 20-30 minutes. The entire counseling process must be completed in a single session.
