Who is this certificate for?
Graduate students (MA, MEd, and PhD) pursuing degrees within the Department of Counselor Education and those who have official transcripts for mental health-related degree(s) are ideal candidates for this certificate.

Crisis Counseling
Students in this certification program analyze and critique issues related to physiological and psychosocial responses to crisis and grief. Suicide and homicide assessments and interventions, crisis intervention after natural disasters, man-made disasters and unexpected events, and working with uncomplicated and complicated grief are some of the topics explored to prepare counselors for a career in grief and crisis counseling.

Neuroscience of Counseling
Students will analyze and critique issues related to the neuroscience of counseling. The basics of neuroscience, introduction to the brain and nervous system, impact of life events on brain and brain development, and the mind-body connection are just some of the topics that courses will explore. Students learn the practical, evidence-based application of counseling practices to help clients who experienced life events that negatively impacted their brain development or brain structure.

Complex Traumatic Stress
Students analyze and critique issues related to chronic and complex post-traumatic stress and complex dissociative disorders. Topics include attachment and trauma, developmental psychopathology, vicarious trauma, assessment and diagnosis, dissociative related disorders, neuroscience of trauma, betrayal trauma, interpersonal trauma, and counseling models and other treatment models.
