Become a Texas School Librarian
Through a blend of specialized coursework and practical application, this certification prepares professionals for a career as a school librarian. Students explore topics such as building curriculum-aligned and pleasure-reading collections, managing a school library, digital literacy, children’s and young adult literature, reference services, and cataloging techniques.
To be recommended for the Texas School Librarian Certification exam, candidates must also hold a valid Texas teaching certificate, a master’s degree, and have two years of classroom experience.
Who is this certificate for?
This program is open to individuals who hold a master’s degree and wish to become a school librarian; however, to be eligible to take the School Librarian Certification exam in Texas, candidates must additionally hold a valid Texas K-12 teaching certificate and have worked for two years as an educator in Texas.

School Library Fundamentals
Candidates learn fundamentals of school librarianship, from administration and management to supporting students’ quests for knowledge. Coursework includes the development and organization of collections that both support school curricula and nurture a love of reading for pleasure at all grade levels. An emphasis is placed on appropriate teaching strategies and production of materials to facilitate achievement of goals using the latest in instructional technologies, including multimedia.

Collection Curation
Candidates are introduced to principles of selection of library materials and procedures involved in building collections for school libraries, which includes latest technological developments, research theories, and site-based applications. Candidates also learn the fundamentals of descriptive cataloging, classification, and subject analysis using the latest editions of all the universally recognized cataloging systems, with a strong focus placed on the broad-based use of the MARC format.

From Children to Young Adults
Curriculum explores the selection, critical analysis, and historical development of literature for children and young adults. Emphasis is placed on selecting recreational and informational materials for children and young adults which reflects our multicultural society; identifying the different techniques, activities, and strategies that motivate children and young adults to read and respond to literature; and developing critical abilities for evaluating literature for children and young adults.
