Texas Reading Specialist at All Levels
This Post-Graduate Certification prepares current educators who hold a graduate degree or higher and a valid Elementary or Secondary teaching certificate to be knowledgeable reading specialists. Candidates will develop expertise as literacy specialists utilizing resources and methods, conducting literacy assessments, and designing interventions to address varied learning needs of all students. Candidates will gain skills necessary to be proactive instructional leaders and literacy advocates of students at all levels of literacy development.
Who is this certificate for?
Educators who hold a graduate degree or higher and a valid elementary or secondary Texas teaching certificate, along with two years of successful teaching experience before taking the Reading Specialist exam (experience can be concurrent with the program), are proper candidates for this stand-alone, post-graduate certification program. For applicants who do not hold a graduate degree, live out-of-state, teach at a private school, or are not able to complete the field experience hours in a TEA location, the M.Ed. in Reading/Language Arts is nationally accredited by the International Literacy Association to develop all-level Reading Specialist dispositions.
Where and How Is This Program Available?
All courses are available online except for 160 hours of field work, embedded into the coursework, to be performed at a TEA-approved location. Field work locations are to be secured by the candidate.
Become a Reading Specialist
This program supports practicing educators who have a passion for assisting young learners with literacy skills. Candidates learn the administrative needs of a literacy program, as well as the techniques to assist very young learners, learners with dyslexia and other special needs, readers who are learning English as an additional language, and more to support the literacy of diverse populations.

Literacy Fundamentals
Candidates learn the historical and philosophical perspectives of literacy education, to contextualize research findings in emergent literacy, cueing systems and comprehension, reading interests, current literacy methodologies, and diversity of learners in schools. Educators will be supervised as they implement a range of formal and informal assessment tools and methods to diagnose and assess reading and writing development, to guide instruction, and to involve the learner in self-assessment.

Reading for All
Courses in this program examine theories, concepts, and research-based pedagogical implications for multisensory language learning models for students with dyslexia and other special needs. The theories related to second language reading, and research on the relationship between first and second language literacy, are explored. Courses also analyze the social contexts of second language reading and instructional practices for second language literacy.

Field-Based Practicum
One hundred and sixty practicum hours are built into this stand-alone certification program, spread out between credit-hour courses to give candidates a balance between classroom theory and field application among a diverse population of students in elementary, secondary, and special needs classrooms, as well as in administration and supervisory roles.
Become a Reading Specialist
This certificate opens pathways for careers as literacy coach/specialist, literacy interventionist, and adjunct instructor of undergraduate-level literacy courses.
