Explore the Art of Photography
The BFA in Photography at SHSU combines technical training and creative development in digital, darkroom, and studio photography. Students learn to craft compelling visual narratives while exploring lighting, editing, printing, and concept development. Courses emphasize both artistic vision and professional practice, preparing students for careers in fine art, commercial photography, and creative industries. Through critiques, exhibitions, and mentorship, students graduate with a portfolio that reflects their individual voice and technical skill.
What do I need to join and stay in the BFA program?
All prospective art majors must submit a portfolio for admission that demonstrates artistic and technical skills. Once accepted, students begin with the WASH (Workshop in Art Studio and History) program and must pass the BFA Portfolio Review, typically in their second year, to continue into advanced coursework.
What technology will I need for this program?
All art majors must have a personal Mac laptop that meets department specifications. Your laptop is your digital studio, giving you access to creative tools anytime, anywhere. SHSU offers an Apple Purchase Program to help reduce costs, and students who qualify for financial aid may be eligible for additional assistance.
