The Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy prepares students to use music to support emotional, physical, cognitive, and social well-being across a wide range of populations. Students complete rigorous coursework in music, psychology, and health, along with supervised clinical training and fieldwork. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for national board certification. With a blend of musicianship, compassion, and clinical skill, graduates are ready to work in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare or community settings.
How Do I Get Into the Music Therapy Program?
To pursue the BM in Music Therapy, students must first be accepted to SHSU and complete both an audition and an interview with music therapy faculty. The audition assesses musical readiness, while the interview explores your interest in the field and your suitability for clinical training. Details are available on the School of Music website.
Is This Program Accredited?
Yes. The BM in Music Therapy at SHSU is approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), ensuring the program meets national standards for music therapy education and clinical training. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national board certification exam to become credentialed music therapists.
