Graduate Study for Music Artists
The Master of Music program offers advanced, personalized study for musicians pursuing careers in performance, conducting, collaborative piano/chamber music, composition, or musicology. Students receive expert instruction and mentorship while refining their musical abilities, expanding their knowledge of music theory and history, and deepening their focus in their chosen area. Whether preparing for doctoral study, professional performance, or academic leadership, the MM program provides the flexibility and depth needed to reach your goals.
How Do I Get Into the MM Program?
To pursue the MM, students must first be accepted to SHSU and then complete an audition or portfolio review, depending on the chosen concentration. Auditions are required for performance, conducting, and collaborative piano/chamber music. Composition and musicology applicants submit a portfolio and writing sample. Each area has specific requirements, so students should review guidelines and prepare accordingly.
Are Graduate Assistantships Available?
Yes. The School of Music offers a limited number of graduate assistantships for qualified MM students. Assistantships may include responsibilities in teaching, ensemble support, accompanying, or administrative work, depending on the student’s concentration and experience. These positions provide financial support and valuable professional development. Applicants are encouraged to indicate interest early in the admissions process.

The MM program supports students in developing advanced skills in performance, research, composition, and leadership. Through individualized instruction and a range of concentrations, students prepare for professional careers or further graduate study.
