Bearkats Put In The Work In Geography
The B.S. in Geography at SHSU blends human and physical geography through two distinct tracks. The Environment, Culture & Development path explores topics like hydrology, conservation, urbanization, and population alongside GIS tools. The Geo-Spatial Information Sciences track focuses on GIS programming, remote sensing, map design, and spatial data analysis. Both paths include field experiences and technical coursework in statistics, mapping, and critical thinking. Graduates emerge ready for roles in planning, environmental management, geospatial analysis, or continue with advanced studies.
What’s the Difference Between the Two Degrees?
The Bachelor of Science (BS) requires additional hours of a social science (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, communication studies, etc.), whereas the Bachelor of Arts (BA) requires additional hours of a foreign language (e.g., Spanish, French, American Sign, etc.).
Maps, Fieldwork, Future Skills
SHSU’s B.S. in Geography prepares students for dynamic roles through dual-track flexibility, hands-on field and GIS practice, and robust analytical training. Whether focusing on human-environment interaction or geospatial tech, the program ensures graduates are equipped with in-demand skills and real-world experience to thrive across environmental, planning, and geospatial industries.
-
Dual Concentration
Choose between Environment, Culture & Development (examining socio-environmental dynamics) or Geo-Spatial Information Sciences (focused on GIS programming, mapping, and remote sensing)—each tailored to specific interests.
-
Field & GIS Experience
Students gain field exposure through field trips and hands-on labs, complemented by training in state-of-the-art GIS and remote sensing technologies housed in dedicated labs.
-
In-Demand Skills
The program emphasizes scientific reasoning, critical thinking, statistical analysis, technical writing, and GIS, preparing graduates to analyze spatial and environmental data effectively.
Find Your Future Career
Graduates work as GIS analysts, urban and environmental planners, conservation specialists, remote sensing technicians, or pursue graduate studies in geosciences and spatial data fields.
Expert Geography Faculty
Geography faculty blend expertise in human and physical geography, GIS, and field research, mentoring students through hands-on labs, field trips, and spatial analysis projects.
