about the program
The Master of Experimental Psychology trains students in the scientific sub-disciplines of psychology (i.e., cognitive, social, physiological, developmental, and learning), with a focus on experimental methods. The program provides a solid foundation in psychological science and prepares graduates for doctoral studies or careers in research and/or teaching positions, rather than administration of clinical mental health services.
The program encourages all students to become involved with cutting-edge research being conducted by program faculty and allows students to pursue a master’s thesis with a faculty mentor's support or pursue a non-thesis option.
When can I begin my studies in this program?
We utilize a cohort system, so that all accepted students begin the program together in the fall semester. We do not accept students to start the program in the Spring or Summer terms.
When and how can I apply?
-
The priority application deadline for fall admission is February 15, but applications will continue to be accepted until all program openings have been filled.
prospective students
Knowledge of the various experimental sub-disciplines of psychology can help you achieve your psychology career goals. Doctoral programs are extremely competitive, and the chances of admission to doctoral programs are unlikely without significant research experience. Many of our students utilize the training that our program provides to make them more prepared and more competitive for doctoral programs in various areas of psychology, both experimental and non-experimental areas, such as clinical or counseling psychology. Some of our other students are more focused on careers in teaching and/or research that they can be successful in with a master's-level degree.

funding opportunities
While funding in MA programs is not guaranteed, there are some ways to obtain funding beyond just student loans. The primary source of funding is via Graduate Assistant (GA) positions. GA positions involve providing assistance to professors who are teaching courses and could also involve teaching laboratory sections of specific courses. GA positions are competitive and must be applied for each semester. There are also many scholarships available through the Psychology Department, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, or the university.
