To teach college-level dual credit classes in the State of Texas, high school teachers must hold a graduate degree and have eighteen graduate hours (six courses) in the teaching field. This program provides those credits. These credits also grant the credentials necessary to teach English at the freshman or sophomore level at colleges in the State of Texas.
How long does it take to finish this program?
We recommend that students take no more than two classes per semester. At this pace, a student could finish in three consecutive semesters.
*Summer courses are available but are not required.

Flexible curriculum
The certificate has three required courses (5313, 5335, and 5384 )and three literature electives. Several different literature courses are available each semester. Students may take one or two course each semester and summer session.

Ability to Transfer to MA
Courses transfer to an MA in English at SHSU. Once the certificate is complete, students only need an additional 18 hours for the MA in English. Students need to complete the MA in English application.

Department events
The department hosts speakers and events throughout the year. The National Book Awards Festival brings award-winning writers to Huntsville every fall. Scholars of literature, linguistics, and writing studies share their research. Many of these events are available on Zoom.
