Professional Skills in Special Education
This certification builds assessment practicum, diagnostic skills, and aptitude in reporting and data analysis of Special Education students. Students learn legislation and case law addressing the rights of individuals with disabilities, assessment of cognitive functioning, and more. A valid teaching certificate, two years classroom teaching experience, and a master's degree are required for state certification. For those who do not have a Master's Degree, the Educational Diagnostician Program is offered in conjunction with the Master's of Special Education.
Who is this certificate for?
Students who have successfully completed an educational diagnostician preparation program that meets the requirements of TAC §239.82 and TAC §239.83, as well as the examination based on the standards identified in TAC §239.83, who hold a valid classroom teaching certificate, have at least two creditable years of classroom teaching experience, and an interest in improving their professional skills in special education are appropriate candidates for this certification program.
Where and How Is This Program Available?
This program requires a total of five courses: an online asynchronous course, practicum courses with online synchronous live lectures, and assessment courses.
Earn Diagnostic Certification
This program provides students with the academic foundations and practical applications for certification as an Educational Diagnostician. Students learn to interpret evaluation results to caregivers, build upon assessment practices and diagnostic skills regarding learning ability, and gain insight into legislation and case law pertaining to special education and individuals with disabilities.

Special Education Assessment
Candidates learn measurement principles, formal and informal assessment, and the connection of assessment to instruction. Students gain experience with diagnostic tools for assessing achievement, social behavior, adaptive behavior, language, and perceptual-motor skills. Candidates pursuing certification in bilingual Spanish special education can study these achievements in English and Spanish and learn appropriate assessment tools for English Language Learners (ELLs).

Cognitive Function Assessments
Students learn the theory, problems, ethical standards, and techniques of administering individual tests of intelligence. Each student will learn to administer, score, and interpret the various cognitive assessments. For those seeking bilingual certification, emphasis is placed on assessment of dual-language individuals in a valid and ethical manner.

Field-Based Practicum
Students gain direct experience in the use of curriculum, methods, and materials for learners with special needs. Additional topics include assessment, modifications, adaptations, learning strategies, direct instruction and collaboration. A field-based practicum in the role of the educational diagnostician under the direction of a certified educational diagnostician completes this program.
