Chemistry for Professional Chemists

Sam Houston State University’s Chemistry program provides students with a deep understanding of chemical principles and hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment. Students learn to critically analyze data, solve real-world problems, and apply chemical knowledge to fields ranging from materials science to environmental research.

Through small class sizes and guided research with expert faculty, students gain access to advanced instrumentation, including atomic absorption, gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV-Vis spectroscopy, 60 MHz and 300 MHz NMR, mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, and capillary electrophoresis.

Graduates leave SHSU ready to contribute to cutting-edge research or continue their studies in graduate or professional programs across chemistry and related sciences.

ACS Certification Advantage

This degree track is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), a distinction that ensures students meet national standards for professional chemistry education. The ACS certification enhances career prospects and graduate school preparation by emphasizing rigorous lab work, quantitative reasoning, and research experience.

Students in this track complete an undergraduate research project (CHEM 4395) and advanced coursework across organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry, ensuring broad professional competency and readiness for certification.

Flexible Paths for Chemistry Majors

Students may also choose alternative chemistry pathways, such as:

  • Chemistry for Other Technical Careers, designed for those pursuing roles in education, applied chemistry, or interdisciplinary industries.

  • Chemistry with Concentrations in Biochemistry & Medicine or Forensic Science, for students interested in biotechnology, health professions, or law enforcement applications.

Each option builds on SHSU’s strong scientific foundation while allowing flexibility to align with personal and professional goals.
