The Astronomy Minor at Sam Houston State University offers students the opportunity to explore the wonders of the universe while deepening their understanding of astronomy and space science. Whether you are preparing for graduate study, pursuing a career in the growing aerospace industry, or simply fascinated by the night sky, this minor offers an engaging introduction to the cosmos.
Students study topics such as stars, galaxies, planetary systems, the search beyond Earth, and some of the most dramatic events in the universe. Coursework emphasizes scientific discovery and observational learning while remaining accessible to students from a variety of academic backgrounds.
A unique feature of the program is access to SHSU’s Dominey Observatory and planetarium. Students can observe the night sky using professional-grade telescopes, participate in observational astronomy experiences, and explore celestial objects through immersive planetarium technology.
What Will I Study?
Students complete coursework covering the solar system, stars, galaxies, search the universe, and cosmic phenomena. Elective options may include observational astronomy, optics, undergraduate research, special topics, and thesis opportunities for students interested in deeper exploration.
