Six SHSU-COM student doctors in the class of 2026 recently learned where they will complete their residency training, months before their classmates receive results in March. Residency is the next stage of medical training after graduation, where new physicians care for patients under supervision while specializing in a chosen field.
SHSU-COM has named Kathryn Potter, MD, as chair of primary care, bringing extensive clinical, teaching and academic leadership experience to the role.
A new psychiatry residency program is launching in the area to help meet the state’s growing behavioral health workforce needs. Developed through the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC), in partnership with Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare and Huntsville Memorial Hospital, the program plans to welcome its inaugural class of four residents in July 2026. SHREC, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited institutional sponsor housed within the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, will oversee the residency.
