Prospective Students

Majoring in education; Early Childhood (EC) to sixth grade or Pre-K to third grade with a Bilingual certification prepares bilingual students to teach bilingual students in dual-language, ESL, and general education classrooms.

Students will take five courses fully in Spanish (BESL 4301, 4303, 4304, 4305, and TESL 3313), this serves to sharpen academic Spanish skills in preparation for the success in the classroom. Our intensive field experiences allow students to work directly with children in schools, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Program Highlights:

Bilingual teacher candidates participate in a Yearlong Residency (YLR) with bilingual students to prepare them for Day 1 teaching upon entering their career.
We encourage any bilingual student to participate in the Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO) to support and advocate for the bilingual community.
Bilingual students have opportunities to attend state conferences to network and gain a deeper understanding of bilingual education, such as the Texas Association of Bilingual Education (TABE).

Beginning freshman student application process:

Complete the $50, non-refundable Online Application for SHSU
Submit your transcripts to SHSU
1. Mail an official high school transcript to:
  Sam Houston State University
  Admissions Office
  Box 2418
  Huntsville, TX 77341-2418
2. Or ask your high school to send an electronic official transcript to Sam Houston State University (code: 003606).
3. If transcripts are from a school outside of the U.S., the document must be translated and evaluated by a NACES accredited service or SDR Educational Consultants. International high school transcript evaluations must include a GPA on a U.S. 4.00 scale.
4. Please note that SHSU does not accept fax or emailed transcripts.
Submit your test scores (optional):
1. Send SAT scores to school code 6643 for SHSU.
2. Send ACT scores to school code 4162 for SHSU.
