The Department of Security Studies prepares students to meet evolving threats to public safety, national security, and critical infrastructure. Through a multidisciplinary approach rooted in the all-hazards framework, we provide students with the knowledge, analytical skills, and strategic mindset needed to address complex security challenges. Our programs emphasize real-world applications, ethical leadership, and innovative problem-solving across sectors including emergency management, law enforcement, cybersecurity, public health, and critical infrastructure protection. With a diverse, globally experienced faculty, we foster academic excellence and practical expertise to develop future leaders, policymakers, and analysts. Our mission is to empower students to contribute meaningfully to the safety and resilience of communities, organizations, and the nation.

COCJ Students Assemble Care Packages for Victims
On Oct. 28, as part of an Academic Community Engagement (ACE) project, Sam Houston State University College of Criminal Justice (SHSU-COCJ) students in Jessica Fleming’s victimology course partnered with Project Beloved and SAAFE House to assemble 70 Beloved Bundles for sexual assault survivors.

COCJ Students and Faculty Recognized by International Organization
Three graduate students and three professors from the Sam Houston State University College of Criminal Justice have been recognized by the American Society of Criminology for their research. The recipients were presented with their awards during the 2025 ASC Annual Meeting, held Nov.12-15 in Washington, D.C.
