Tenure, Administrative Changes Approved

Sam Houston State University's board of regents approved the granting of tenure for 18 faculty members and administrative changes in four academic areas at its regular quarterly meeting Thursday.

The board also adopted a resolution of appreciation to Rolando V. del Carmen, distinguished professor of criminal justice, in recognition of his selection as a Piper Professor of 1998.

Those granted tenure, effective in the 1998 Fall Semester, were:

Monte L. Thies, assistant professor, Biological Sciences; Julie E. Hall, assistant professor, and Rafael E. Saumell-Munoz, assistant professor, English and Foreign Languages; Betsy D. Torrez, assistant professor, Geography and Geology; Rosanne M. Barker, assistant professor, Caroline Castillo Crimm, assistant professor, and Tracy L. Steele, assistant professor, History.

Also, Johnny G. Carroll, assistant professor, Jaimie L. Hebert, assistant professor, and Mark L. Klespis, associate professor, Mathematical and Information Sciences; A. Wayne Barrett, assistant professor, Music; David W. Donnelly, assistant professor, Physics.

Also, Mary Evelyn Collins, associate professor, Public Communication; Jerry S. Hooker, assistant professor, Theatre and Dance; Myrna Cintron, assistant professor, Criminal Justice; Janis D. White, assistant professor, Family and Consumer Sciences; Teri L. Oparanozie, assistant professor, Newton Gresham Library.

Criminal Justice assignments relating to reorganization after the departure of Dean Timothy Flanagan included:

Billy W. Bramlett, associate professor of criminal justice, who becomes assistant dean for undergraduate studies; Jurg Gerber, associate professor of criminal justice and assistant dean for graduate studies becomes associate dean for academic administration; and William W. Johnson, associate professor of criminal justice and assistant dean for undergraduate studies, becomes assistant dean for graduate studies.

Margaret Farnworth, who became acting dean upon Flanagan's departure, had served as associate dean for academic administration.

Personnel changes in other university programs included Charles R. Meitzler, associate professor of physics, to chair, Physics, replacing Russell L. Palma, who is taking a leave of absence for the 1998 Fall Semester.

Also, Thomas D. Higgins, associate professor and chair of Technology to interim chair of Family and Consumer Services, replacing Bettye S. Weatherall, who retired July 31; and Ruth M. Pate, instructor of journalism and program coordinator of Journalism, to instructor of journalism. Hugh S. Fullerton became coordinator of the Journalism program July 15.
