Sam Houston State University head football coach Willie Fritz has been named one of the five Football Championship Series finalists for the 2012 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award.
The award promotes charity and scholarship while honoring coaches for their sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence, on and off the field.
The finalists were determined as a result of fan voting through coachoftheyear.com and Twitter from Sept. 12-Dec.1 and evaluated through a scoring model endorsed by the College Football Hall of Fame.
Along with Fritz, the finalists include Jeff Monken, Georgia State; Rob Ash, Montana State; Joe Moglia, Coastal Carolina; and Danny Rocco, Richmond.
From Dec. 4-Dec. 20, Bearkat fans can vote for Fritz by visiting coachoftheyear.com on their PC, tablet or mobile device and posting a tweet.
Winners will be determined by using the following voting weight: Fans 20 percent, College Football Hall of Fame 55 percent, and Media 25 percent.
Liberty Mutual will announce the winners in the Division I-FBS, Division I-FCS, Division II and Division II categories the morning of the BCS Championship game on Jan. 7, 2013. The FCS coaching winner will receive a $50,000 donation from Liberty Mutual to the charity or charities of his choice, as well as a $20,000 scholarship grant in his name to his school’s alumni association.
