Letter from the President

May 22, 2020

Dear SHSU Community,

As easing restrictions continue, Texas, like many states, is experiencing a resurgence in positive COVID-19 cases. While expected, the rise in hospitalizations is troubling. Public-health experts have suggested that it may be some time before it is safe to hold large-scale, public gatherings.

For the health and safety of all, I hope you will join us in a virtual commencement celebration, one that will incorporate the most important elements of this time-honored tradition.

It is often cited that a college education can change lives. It does. I have personally witnessed the incredible and transformative power of education in the lives of countless students. At every commencement, I look across a sea of graduates and their supporters and reflect on the fortitude of each person. The keen sense of triumph that comes when a dream is realized. It is the most gratifying responsibility I carry as president of this esteemed university.

This year's commencement is my last in this role, and while it may be different, my feelings remain the same. In fact, it may be one of my proudest moments, as I understand the unprecedented challenges our graduates overcame in order to earn their degree.

While this was a difficult decision for us all, know that SHSU will honor the Class of 2020 in a fitting celebration.

Virtual Commencement

For a university, the commencement ceremony is a venerated academic tradition. As we have done for over 140 years, Sam Houston State University will continue to this tradition by recognizing 2020 graduates for both spring and summer semesters on Saturday, August 1 at 1 p.m.

We intend to ensure this virtual commencement offers a graduation experience that is rich and meaningful. Names will be called and accomplishments recognized during a live-streamed ceremony. Each graduate will receive a commemorative graduation package prior to the ceremony. Individual colleges are also planning their own unique way to celebrate the Class of 2020.

More information on the ceremony and college recognition will be forthcoming.

In-Person Commencement

We remain committed to finding opportunities to bring us all together in person for a celebration when feasible and safe. All 2020 graduates are invited back to campus so we may recognize their accomplishments, individually and as a class, once in-person commencement resumes.
