Letter from the President

July 13, 2020

Sam Houston State University is committed to returning as an on-campus living and learning environment for fall 2020.

As always, the safety and health of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. To accomplish our goal of reopening campus next month, we have developed an extensive readiness plan that offers safe and flexible options for class participation and activities in compliance with public health guidance, state directives and best practices. A group of university leaders will regularly review and update plans throughout the year in order to adapt to the ever-changing environment. Please visit our Restart 2020 website for comprehensive information on how SHSU will restart the new semester.

As we prepare to welcome students back to campus and begin the fall semester on August 17, know that we are committed to...

... providing a safe working and learning environment for all faculty, staff and students through data-informed decisions, enhanced cleaning and social distancing measures.

... ensuring continued academic success through flexible learning optionsfor all students and faculty that make the best use of instructional time such as blended courses, virtual academic and student services, new and engaging curricula, and enhanced technology.

... protecting our Bearkat community by providing safer working, living and social environments in order to deliver on the collegiate experience.

Our final and most important commitment to you is to... maintain a culture of caring for the health and safety of oneself and others through open dialogue and proactive and transparent communication.

We understand that the Bearkat experience extends well beyond the classroom or office and is an integral part of a student's overall education or an employee's work day. As life on our campus is dynamic, collaborative and social, we hope to provide you with the confidence and access needed to fully participate. In order to make the most of a semester that will be different in some aspects, we must all demonstrate flexibility, patience, sensitivity and a sense of shared responsibility.

While we cannot predict the future, know that our commitment to you, your health and safety, and overall success will never waiver.

Again, please familiarize yourself with our new Restart 2020 website. It contains many of the answers you need in order to take an active role in our community.
