Spring '22 Semester Update

January 3, 2022

Dear Bearkat Community,

Welcome to a new year and a new semester! I hope you enjoyed your holidays and had the opportunity to take some much-needed time off with family and friends.

While I wish we could put COVID-19 behind us, we’ll begin the spring semester facing another surge due to the Omicron variant. We managed to enjoy a wonderful fall semester in spite of the Delta variant surge, and if we continue to follow our proven mitigation strategies, I’m confident the spring can be just as successful.

The COVID-19 Work Group monitors CDC guidance and data from Walker and Montgomery Counties and surrounding areas. Based on the most current information, we will start the spring semester as planned, in-person, on Wednesday, Jan. 12. We will continue to monitor the situation as new data becomes available.

Much of our success is attributable to your hard work, diligence and cooperation. Thank you for your care and concern for our community. As we prepare for the start of classes, I encourage you to consider the following preventive measures:

  • Get vaccinated and boosted to protect against infection or severe illness. Although the Student Health Center no longer provides COVID-19 vaccines, vaccines are readily available at commercial pharmacies and local health departments.
  • Get tested. Free test kits are available, while supplies last*, at the Lowman Student Center, Newton Gresham Library and Student Health Center.
  • Don’t go to class or work if you’re sick. I encourage faculty and supervisors to be understanding and supportive of our colleagues and students who must be absent due to COVID concerns.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19, please report it using the COVID-19 Self Report Form.
  • Visit the COVID-19 website for up-to-date information.

I look forward to the time we can anticipate a new semester without having to talk about COVID-19, but in the meantime, I appreciate you all for helping to make 2022 a safer and healthier year for our entire Bearkat community.

Sincerely,

Alisa White
