The Graduate Writing Lab is a space that provides resources for research, exam review, presentation or project prep, and general community. The lab is available to all currently enrolled SHSU graduate students, regardless of program or research project, Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The lab is equipped with two computer stations, and can accommodate up to four students for group sessions. Basic supplies and printing are available, with advanced amenities such as statistical data software, a large whiteboard, resumé and cover letter materials, and more. Students may bring their own supplies if they choose. Appointments are not necessary at this time, but may be required in the future. The Graduate Writing Lab is located in the Arleigh B. When is the lab open for use?
The lab is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
Will the lab be opened on weekends, breaks, and holidays?
As of now, no. We are looking to expand our operation hours in the future.
Who is authorized to use the lab?
The lab is available to all currently enrolled SHSU graduate students.
Is the lab restricted to those writing their theses or dissertations?
No. The lab is not “just a writing space.” The lab is a controlled environment that provides resources for research, exam review, presentation or project prep, and general community.
Do I have to schedule an appointment?
No. In the early goings, appointments are not required. You may walk in. As student frequency increases, appointments may be necessary. The Graduate School will communicate this when appropriate.
How large is the writing lab?
Currently, the lab can comfortably accommodate a minimum of two students (for computer usage), and a maximum of four for group sessions. Our office plans to expand our space in the future.
Does the lab have computers?
Yes. The computers are also equipped with statistical data programs.
Are supplies available?
Yes. Basic supplies are available for use (writing utensils, notepads, dry erase materials, printing, etc.).
May I bring my own computer and supplies?
Yes. Please feel free to bring your own supplies. Power outlets are provided for laptop and cell phone charging.
What is the/Is there a printing limit?
Let’s try to limit printing to no more than 25 pages per day, per individual. Please utilize the library for larger printing needs.
Are there any additional amenities?
Yes. The lab has been equipped with a large whiteboard for individual and team collaboration. Each work station includes a desk lamp with a soft bulb for those who prefer a dim working environment. Supplies for resume and cover letter production, binding, and organizing are available. For those who work better in quiet settings, noise canceling headphones are also offered.
