Outside Scholarships are funds received from sources outside the University such as booster club scholarships, PTO scholarships, etc. These funds should be sent to the Special Services Cashier for processing as quickly as possible.

Texas Tuition Promise Fund

The purchaser of plan must go to the Texas Tuition Promise Fund website and authorize SHSU to retrieve the student's information. The student will then need to contact the Bursar's Office so that we can apply the credit. Students will be responsible for:

Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan

The student will need to supply the Bursar's Office with an In-State Enrollment Verification Letter from the Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan website each semester. In-State Enrollment Verification letters may be delivered to the Bursar's Office, faxed to 936-294-1229, or emailed to bursar@shsu.edu. It must be Signed and dated by the Student before the Tuition Waiver can be applied. The Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan pays undergraduate tuition and required fees. Required fees are those fees that are mandatory as a condition of enrollment for all students attending a University regardless of major or program of study. In other words, the Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan pays for the fees that every student must pay.

This does not include course specific fees such as lab fees or any fees that are charged just to certain students in specified majors. For example, many colleges charge students fees based on what course of study they are pursuing; these fees would not be covered by the Fund because they are not charged to every student enrolling at the University. Examples of other fees not covered are lab fees, music fees, distance learning fees, and fees charged for classes offered at alternated locations such as The Woodlands Center.

Graduate tuition is not covered under the Fund.

Waivers & Exemptions

  • Blind & Deaf Waiver

    Under Section 54.205 of the Education Code, this exemption covers students who are either legally blind or deaf. This waives all tuition and fees (general property fee included), for the student’s academic career, undergraduate and graduate school. The student is to provide the Bursar’s Office with a letter from the Texas Commission for the Blind or the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The student needs to bring the letter to the Bursar’s Office after they register for their first semester at SHSU. Once we receive this letter from the student, the letter is good for the student’s entire academic career and we will apply the waiver to the student’s account. Still, after the student registers each semester, it is the student’s responsibility to let the Bursar’s Office know that he or she is registered and the waiver needs to be applied to his or her student account.

    Requirements:

  • Children of Deceased or Disabled Fireman, Police Officer, Correctional Officer, or Game Warden

    Under Section 54.204 of the Education Code, this exemption covers students who are children of firefighters, police officers, correctional officers, or game wardens killed or disabled in the line of duty. The student must also be in good academic standing with SHSU and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. This waiver covers tuition and fees (excluding general property fee) for 120 undergraduate hours. If the student attended another college or colleges before attending SHSU, they will need to provide our office with proof of how many hours were used at those previous institutions. The student will need to contact the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in order to qualify for this waiver. Once we receive confirmation from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the student has registered for their first semester as SHSU, we can apply the waiver to the student’s account. Yet, after the student registers each semester, it is the student’s responsibility to let the Bursar’s Office know that he or she is registered and the waiver needs to be applied to his or her student account. The waiver WILL NOT be automatically applied to the student’s account.

    Requirements:

    Child of deceased or disabled fireman, police officer, correctional officer, game warden

    Minimum GPA of 2.0

    If a transfer student: proof of hours used at other institutions

  • Disabled Peace Officers Waiver

    This exemption is for peace officers who are permanently disabled as a result of an injury suffered in the line of duty. The exemption covers tuition and fees for up to 12 semesters or sessions, while enrolled in either undergraduate, graduate, or the doctoral program. The student has to obtain a letter from their administrative office stating they are disabled as a result of an injury suffered in the line of duty. Once the student obtains the letter and the student has registered for their first semester at SHSU, they need to take the letter to the Bursar’s Office so that we can apply the waiver to the student’s account. Yet, after the student registers each semester, it is the student’s responsibility to let the Bursar’s Office know that he or she is registered and the waiver needs to be applied to his or her student account. The waiver WILL NOT be automatically applied to the student’s account.

    Requirements:

    Have been disabled as a result of an injury suffered in the line of duty

    Have a letter from the student’s administrative office stating the disability

    Covers:

    Tuition and fees (excluding general property fee) for up to 12 semesters or sessions in undergraduate, graduate, or the doctoral program

  • Foster Care Waiver/Adoption Waiver

    House Bill 1356 exempts Protective and Regulatory Services foster care youths from tuition and fees (excluding general property fee) at State supported institutions of higher education. This exemption also covers graduate work. The student must start college within 3 years of being discharged from foster care. The student should obtain a letter from the Protective and Regulatory Services. The student needs to bring the letter to the Bursar’s Office after they register for their first semester at SHSU. Once we receive this letter from the student, the letter is good for the student’s entire academic career and we will apply the waiver to the student’s account. Still, after the student registers each semester, it is the student’s responsibility to let the Bursar’s Office know that he or she is registered and the waiver needs to be applied to his or her student account.

    Requirements:

    Student must have been a foster care child under the Protective and Regulatory Services program in the State of Texas

    Student must begin college within 3 years of being discharged from foster care

    Student must maintain a grade point average that satisfies the college/university's policy regarding eligibility for financial aid. (This applies to both undergraduate and graduate students.)

    Not complete credit hours considered to be excessive under Section 54.014, unless the college/university allows the student to do so on a showing of good cause. (This applies ONLY to undergraduate students.)

  • Hazelwood Veterans

    Students who believe they qualify for the Hazlewood waiver must first contact the Veteran’s Resource Center to verify their veteran’s benefits. Once that is verified, the Veteran's Resource Center issues a verification that is sent to the Financial Aid Office and Bursar’s Office. Once this process is complete this is our approval to post the waiver. The Hazlewood waiver covers tuition and all fees except student service fee, athletic fee, and general property fee for a maximum of 150 credit hours including correspondence courses.

  • Nursing Preceptor

    This is a new exemption that covers up to $500 of tuition only for approved clinical preceptors and their children. The student must fill ou the application and then send it to the Bursar’s Office. Also, the student has to provide proof that they or their parent is a clinical preceptor along with the application. Once approved, an amount up to $500 will be waived for the student’s approved semester tuition.

    Requirements:

    Only clinical preceptors and their children qualify

  • Nursing Faculty

    To provide an exemption of tuition to eligible students to encourage their parents to continue employment as professional nurse faculty or staff members in the State of Texas.

    Requirements:

    To receive an award through the Exemption Program for Children of Professional Nursing Faculty and Staff, a student shall:

    1. be a resident of Texas, not have been granted a baccalaureate degree,
    2. be enrolled at an institution that offers an undergraduate or graduate program of professional nursing
    3. be the child of an individual who:
      1. at the beginning of the semester or other academic term for which an exemption is sought: holds a master's or doctoral degree in nursing, and is employed full-time by a undergraduate or graduate professional nursing program offered by the institution that the child is attending and is employed as a member of the faculty or staff with duties that include teaching, performing research, serving as an administrator, or performing other professional services other than serving as a teaching assistant, or holds a baccalaureate degree in nursing and is employed by a professional nursing program offered by the institution as a full-time teaching assistant, or
      2. during all or part of the semester or other academic term for which an exemption is sought: holds a master's or doctoral degree in nursing, and has contracted with an undergraduate or graduate professional nursing program in this state to serve as a full-time member of its faculty or staff with duties that include teaching, performing research, serving as an administrator, or performing other professional services other than serving as a teaching assistant, or holds a baccalaureate degree in nursing and has contracted with a professional nursing program offered by the institution to serve as a full-time teaching assistant.
    4. be enrolled at the same institution of higher education at which the student's parent is currently employed or with which the parent has contracted, either as a professional nursing faculty or staff member,
    5. Register for the Selective Service or be exempt from this requirement.

  • Valedictorian Scholarship

    The governing board of each institution of higher education may issue scholarships each year to the highest ranking graduate of each accredited Texas high school, exempting the graduates from the payment of tuition during both semesters of the first regular session immediately following their graduation. This exemption may be granted for any one of the first four regular sessions following the individual’s graduation from high school when in the opinion of the institution’s president the circumstance of the individual case, including military service, merit the action.

    The student is to bring the original certificate, received from their high school counselor, naming him/her valedictorian of their specific accredited Texas high school to the Bursar’s Office. It is the student’s responsibility to deliver the certificate to the Bursar’s Office once they have registered for classes. At that point, the student may request the scholarship be applied to their student account. This same rule applies when the student registers for the second semester immediately following their high school graduation. A request must be made by the student in order to have the scholarship applied. The scholarship will not be automatically applied to the student’s account at anytime.

    Requirements:

    Be named the valedictorian of the student’s accredited Texas high school

    Have a certificate from the State of Texas naming this student the valedictorian of their specific high school

    Use the scholarship during the first two semesters of the first regular session following the individual’s graduation from high school
