Music Education

Dr. Sandy Hinkley is the newly appointed Coordinator of Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Sam Houston State University, where she teaches Choral Methods and conducts the Men’s Choir. Dr. Hinkley taught choral music in Florida for 20 years at both the middle and high school levels. Ensembles under her direction have performed at ACDA State, Southern Division, and National Conferences and she has conducted honor choirs throughout the state of Florida.

Over the years, Dr. Hinkley has supervised student teachers from various Florida universities and she has served on a number of writing teams for secondary music curriculum. She has presented sessions at the FMEA Professional Development Convention, as well as at ACDA State, Southern Division, and National Conferences. Dr. Hinkley is an active clinician and adjudicator, with research interests that include choral pedagogy, vocal modeling, music literacy and assessment, and teacher retention.

Dr. Hinkley received a Ph.D. in Choral Conducting and Music Education from Florida State University, a M.M.E. from the University of Central Florida, and a B.M.E. from Florida State University. Influential teachers include Judy Bowers, David Brunner, Kevin Fenton, John Geringer, Al Holcomb, Clifford Madsen, and André Thomas.
