Educational Leadership Endowed Scholarships

The Allie Wilson Horne Educational Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. Sue Horne of Montgomery, Texas in memory of her mother, Allie Wilson Horne. It is the Donor’s intent for the endowment to provide one or more annual scholarship awards at a minimum of $1,000 each to be announced in the spring and disbursed the following academic year, half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.

This scholarship was established in memory of Carol Ritter who believed in education. After teaching at various elementary schools in both Louisiana and Texas, Carol decided to pursue her Master’s degree at Sam Houston State University. Upon completion of her degree, she returned to the public schools to serve as Assistant Principal, then later as Math Coordinator and then Testing Coordinator. Again, she returned to Sam Houston to receive her Doctorate of Educational Leadership in 1999. Dr. Ritter was instrumental is creating the distance learning program to assist students with pursuing their Master’s degrees without having to physically be on campus. Carol had to make the tough decision to retire so that she could focus on her health. In 2011, she passed away, but her legacy lives on through this scholarship and the passion for education that she shared with so many of the people she worked with. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.

The Dr. Genevieve H. Brown and Dr. Beverly J. Irby Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. Brown and Dr. Irby to provide financial assistance to a female graduate student pursuing a degree in Educational Leadership or Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University. Dr. Brown and Dr. Irby were instrumental in securing the Center for Research in Educational Leadership at Sam Houston State University and are co-founders and co-editors of the internationally acclaimed professional, refereed journal, Advancing Women in Leadership. It is the Donor’s intent for the endowment to provide one or more annual scholarship awards to be announced in the spring and disbursed the following academic year, half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.

The Dr. Jimmy N. Merchant Graduate Endowment Scholarship was established by the Department of Educational Leadership at Sam Houston State University in honor of Dr. Jimmy N. Merchant. It is the Donor’s intent for the endowment to provide one or more annual scholarship awards to be announced in the spring and disbursed the following academic year, half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.

The Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership admitted its first cohort in 1997. In August 2013, the program celebrated its 200th doctoral graduate. In honor of this accomplishment, the Educational Leadership Doctoral Alumni Scholarship is being established to provide a targeted venue for these graduates, and other supporters of the program, to make donoations to financially support the progree of current students working towards their doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. This scholarship was established to assist with education expenses.
