"Building a Bridge to College Success"

The English Language Institute (ELI) of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, is a part of the Office of International Programs, whose goal is to help students from around the world achieve their academic and professional objectives. To that end, the ELI provides an effective learning program where international students can improve their English communication skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We understand the variety of English learning goals our students have and we make every effort to help them achieve these goals. Our students are important to us and we care about them and their needs.

Mission Statement

The mission of the English Language Institute is to provide necessary English language abilities, academic skills, and cultural awareness for international students to be admitted into undergraduate or graduate studies at Sam Houston State University or other colleges and universities.

Goals

• Deliver instruction that is student-centered, academically oriented, research-based, compassionate, coordinated across the curriculum, and aligned with the ELI mission.

• Offer administrative assistance by advising students on visa issues, intervening with students who are struggling, and facilitating the resolution of problems that students may encounter.

• Coordinate support services, such as tutoring, counseling, and information technology, for ELI students in conjunction with other SHSU departments.

• Organize cultural activities, including field trips and social gatherings, for ELI students to integrate into the university and its surrounding communities.

Students attending the SHSU ELI for spring 2012 come from:

China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, Venezuela, Thailand, Jordan, Cambodia and Central African Republic
